Ionic compounds: Oxidation numbers in ionic compounds are directly related to the charges of the ions. For example, in sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium (Na+) has an oxidation number of +1, while chloride (Cl-) has an oxidation number of -1.



Covalent compounds: Oxidation numbers in covalent compounds are determined based on electron distribution principles. More electronegative atoms tend to attract electrons, gaining a negative oxidation number, while less electronegative atoms lose electrons, acquiring a positive oxidation number.



Polyatomic ion compounds: Oxidation numbers in polyatomic ions are determined by considering the individual charges of the atoms within the ion and the overall charge of the ion. For instance, in sulfate (SO4^2-), sulfur (S) has an oxidation number of +6, while each oxygen (O) has an oxidation number of -2.

Magnesium oxide (MgO): Magnesium (Mg) has an oxidation number of +2, while oxygen (O) has an oxidation number of -2.



Ammonia (NH3): Nitrogen (N) has an oxidation number of -3, while each hydrogen (H) has an oxidation number of +1.



Potassium permanganate (KMnO4): Potassium (K) has an oxidation number of +1, manganese (Mn) has an oxidation number of +7, and each oxygen (O) has an oxidation number of -2.
